What to do with Tim Tebow?
According to sources close to the Jets, the Jets and Tebow will part ways at the end of this brutal season.
I have stated in numerous podcasts, that Tim Tebow is not an NFL quarterback. Each time I mention that, someone is quick to jump on my case. I have nothing against Tebow. My issue is with his QB play.
However, we must think that none of this would be an issue if it wasn’t for former Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels. McDaniels was an integral part in drafting Tebow with the 25th pick, in the first round, in 2010. Most draft gurus felt Tebow was a late round pick. As a Broncos fan, I can honestly say that I was fuming with the selection.
Once Tebow was selected in the first round, the expectation for him to play became overwhelming. When Kyle Orton struggled at the beginning of the 2011 season, Tebow was thrust into the starting role. He was able to help lead the Broncos, with the help of the defense, to the playoffs.
After the season, Broncos exec John Elway, who didn’t really want Tebow anyway, dealt him to the New York Jets. The trade effectively dumped the expectations and Tebow blowhards on the Jets. The trade also allowed Denver to drastically upgrade the QB position with the signing of Peyton Manning.
With Mark Sanchez struggling, and now benched, the Jets are now dealing with the fans wanting Tebow to play. That won’t be the case. The Jets announced that 3rd string quarterback, Greg McElroy, will be the starter for the remainder of the season. With that move, it shows that even the Jets don’t have faith in Tebow to win as a quarterback. In fact, it doesn’t appear that 31 other NFL teams do either.
Which brings up the question, what to do with Tim Tebow?
Here is my feeling on what he should do.
Tebow is a physical freak. If he wants to stay in the NFL, he should look at changing positions. He should hone his skills and become a tight end or a full back. He is a big guy who is very athletic. I think he could definitely benefit a team as a full back or tight end. He can run, block and catch. That is the perfect solution for him if he wants to stay in the NFL.
However, if Tebow is stubborn and wants to stay as quarterback, he should head north to the Canadian Football League. In the CFL, he could hone his skills for a couple of years and hopefully become a better passer. Tebow could then head south and look at becoming a starter in the NFL.
As of now, Tebow will not be a starting quarterback for any team in the NFL. The Jacksonville Jaguars are the most logical destination for Tebow. However, the owner is the one who really wants him. The coaches down in Jacksonville are not interested in having him be the starter over Blaine Gabbert.
Tebow can definitely help a team in the NFL, just not at quarterback.
It will be very interesting to see where he ends up. One thing is certain, ESPN will be all over this story.
