Many boxing fans are losing their interest in the sports because some of the fighters/promoters are putting lopsided match ups together. With that being said, I think the majority of the fans are enjoying MMA more. Dana White, the president of UFC and a former boxer, consistantly puts better fights together.
What needs to happen to protect and bring back the excitement in boxing?
The superfight. The obvious match for the fans is the fight, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. Unfortunately, either they are fighting at the age of 40 when they are slow or it will never happen.
Mayweather is fighting in September, in a rematch with Argentinean Marcos Maidana. Maidana probably had the best chance of dethroning the king in first seven rounds. Maidana is a dirty brawler with very aggressive and suffocating style. Not to mention he punches from unpredictable angles.
He has one asset, his overhand haymaker. However he rarely connects.
Maidana put Mayweather against the ropes but Mayweather figured him out as the fight went on and won the fight by dissecting Maidana in the second half. The rematch in September will pick up right where they left off and Mayweather will win by unanimous decision.
Pacquiao is trying to get a fight in November with Chris Algieri, who just upset the Siberian Rocky, Ruslan Provodnikov. This is a pussy way for Manny to rack up a win to protect his legacy and make some money to pay off his taxes.
Provodnikov is a younger version of Juan Manuel Marquez.
Provodnikov punches harder than Maidana and has better techniques. Although he gets beat up during his fights, he charges forward swinging and American fans need this particular style to bring the excitement back.
He is very likely the descendent of Genghis Khan, and he may be able to dethrone either Pacquiao or Mayweather in the future if he wins next two fights in impressive knockouts.
Wladmir Klitchko, is definitely the champ in heavyweights. The problem is, I have not seen a good fight from him since he fought Lennox Lewis, a decade ago.
It’s time to retire or accept the challenge and come fight the undefeated Deontay Wilder in Las Vegas. Wilder has the knockout power and if he connects and he will, Klitschko is going to sleep.
Here is what I am hoping to see in next two years:
