Here is another edition of my daily thoughts.
NFL
The first round of the NFL draft takes place tonight. There is a lot of intrigue as to who will be taking Oregon QB Marcus Mariotta with the second overall pick. The rumors have been flying around about which teams are looking to trade up. There is a lot of talent in this draft and I am pretty excited to see which team gets which player(s). The rumors of the Cleveland Browns trading one of their first round picks to the Eagles for Sam Bradford just makes me laugh. The Browns are just, well, the Browns. Sam Bradford is an injury-prone quarterback and the Browns would be better off not trading for him.
NHL Playoffs
The first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs concluded last night after the Tampa Bay Lightning knocked off the Detroit Red Wings by a 2-0 score in Game 7 of their series. I am going to be completely honest when I say that I am truly thrilled the Wings are heading home. There is one thing that truly bothers me from this series. The griping about the game seven suspension of Red Wings defenseman, Niklas Kronwall, for his hit on Nikita Kucherov of the Lightning was enough to drive me up a wall. I don’t care if it’s the playoffs or not. If the hit was a suspendable offense, then he should get suspended. I don’t care what player it is. A dangerous play is a dangerous play. Plain and simple. I was stunned there was not a penalty called on the play. However, during these playoffs, nothing has surprised me when it comes to the refs. I am glad the NHL grew a pair and make the right decision to suspend Kronwall for game seven.
CONCACAF Champions League
Montreal just didn’t have enough to get it done last night in the return leg of the CONCACAF Champions League Final. The crowd was loud and the Stade Olympique was rocking. The Impact got it going early on as the MLS side went up 1-0 early in the game, taking a 2-1 aggregate lead. Mexican powerhouse Club America came out absolutely on fire in the second half, scoring four goals in quick succession. Club America came out and quickly destroyed the hopes of the Impact and once again making MLS a bridesmaid. With the championship, Club America will get to play in the FIFA Club World Cup. For perceptions of the league to change around the world, MLS needs to put more resources towards this competition. One thing is certain, did anyone truly think the first MLS team to win the CONCACAF Champions League, would be the basement dwelling Montreal Impact?
