What was being billed as the Fight of the Century, turned out to be much less than that.

Finally, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao met in the ring last night at the MGM Grand, in front of a capacity crowd. The numbers surrounding this fight were astronomical. Some estimates were that this fight was to gross approx $400 million. Those are incredible numbers for any pay-per-view event, much less, a boxing event.

I am truly glad I was able to watch the fight and would still spend the $100 to get that fight. Many I have spoken with and have heard from, are upset they spent the money for “that” fight.

To those people I say, what did you expect?

What were your realistic expectations for this fight?

If you recall on our fight preview show (link here) from last Thursday, Jin and myself discussed the two styles of Mayweather and Pacquiao and how the fight could indeed be boring. We hoped the fight would be exciting but expected it to be dull. I’ve seen many people ripping on Mayweather for his style in this fight. That is how Mayweather fights. He is a defensive fighter.

I thought Mayweather and Pacquiao fought a great fight. Pacquiao just didn’t do enough to win, while Mayweather was calculated in his approach. Pacquiao had to land significantly more punches than Mayweather to have a chance. He did not do that.

Mayweather sat back and moved around the ring landing a couple shots as he went. This was a prototypical Floyd Mayweather fight and people need to realize that and calm their expectations. Most of those expectations were coming from people who have never watched a boxing match in their lives and were just upset they spent $100 on a fight. This was more than a fight. It was an event. This was the type of event you wanted to spend that money on, regardless of the outcome.

Coming out of this fight, it is safe to say, mixed martial arts is still the cool kid in town. Boxing is missing a lot and the sport seems to be dying. Boxing has two true stars. Those stars fought last night. MMA is loaded with many personalities that can easily be marketed. Boxing was king many years ago. That image has certainly changed and boxing may never be able to recover to reach the level it once had.

If you’re looking for excitement and great fight action, then turn your attention to mixed martial arts as those fights won’t let you down.
