The second largest tennis tournament in the United States appears to be headed to New York for this summer. The Western & Southern Open tournament in Mason, Ohio is always a warmup for the US Open and is regularly played in by the top men’s and women’s tennis players in the world. According to a New York Times report, the United States Tennis Association is looking to set up a massive doubleheader, to include the Western & Southern Open and the U.S. Open to be held at the U.S.T.A. Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
The Western & Southern Open Tournament Officials released a statement earlier this week: “No official decision has been made surrounding the 2020 Western & Southern Open at this time. The USTA and Western & Southern Open have been exploring multiple scenarios for the tournament. The number one goal is to hold the tournament, in some form, this summer. In all of our modeling, the health and safety of the players, fans, volunteers and staff will be our greatest concern. To align with the decision-making timeline of the WTA and the ATP, we expect a final decision on the status of the tournament to be made in mid-June.”
This could be a big hit for the city of Mason and the income that comes into the surrounding areas when this fantastic event is going on. This has been such a unique year for sports and moving one of the biggest tennis tournaments in the world is just another strange discussion point in the world of sports.
The 2020 Western & Southern Open is scheduled for August 15-23, at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason.
