The first week of the high school football season in the tri-state area once again delivered. We saw three of the top five teams losing, with top ranked Moeller getting smoked by Ben Davis from Indiana. The biggest game of the first week saw Lakota West travel to St. Xavier in a battle of the 2nd and 3rd ranked teams. The St. X Bombers came away with a 10-0 victory. The Elder Panthers were the other top 5 team that fell, dropping a home game to Pickerington North, 39-35. Winton Woods, who was expected to take a slight step back, showed no slowing down, knocking off Trotwood Madison, 21-7. The Princeton Vikings are another team that could make a lot of noise this season and they got their season off to a good start, cruising in victory over Elyria, 41-7. Fairfield is another team that will be one to watch in the GMC Conference, lost in a high scoring affair to Huber Heights Wayne, 58-51. The two teams in rankings not from Ohio, East Central and Beechwood each came away with solid victories. The East Central Trojans destroyed Lawrenceburg 41-7, while the Beechwood Tigers crossed the river to knock off the McNicholas Rockets, 31-14. The Eastern Cincinnati Conference looks to be a three team race, with Anderson entering the fold. The Raptors went south into Kentucky and knocked off South Oldham, 44-15.

Week 2 of the season has some intriguing matchups. Three of the four big GCL schools face out of state opponents, with new top ranked St. Xavier facing Detroit Martin Luther King at Wayne State University in Michigan. The Moeller Crusaders look to rebound against another Indiana opponent, Bishop Dwenger from Ft. Wayne. Neumann-Goretti Catholic from Philadelphia make the trek west to face Elder at The Pit. One of the top conferences in the area, the GMC saw its teams go a measly 2-8 in the opening week. Lakota West fell two spots to 4th, faces off against a Princeton Vikings team that jumped them in the rankings at #3. The last GMC team in the top 10, Fairfield faces off against a Sycamore team that will help the Indians get back into the win column.

Winton Woods came away with a big 21-7 victory to open the season, face off against a Walnut Hills team that simply just doesn’t measure up to the Warriors. Winton Woods jumped four spots to the number two spot and will look to continue their hot start. The other ECC team in the rankings, the Anderson Raptors, rolled to a big victory over South Oldham in Kentucky. The Raptors return home to open the season against a solid Milford Eagles team, looking to knock Anderson off their perch. The lone Indiana team in the rankings, East Central face off against their border rival, the Harrison Wildcats in a solid battle for the border. East Central is a fantastic team and a victory over Harrison will help them as they look to capture another Indiana state championship. South of the river, the Beechwood Tigers who have rolled everyone in their path, started off the season with a nice 31-14 win over McNicholas. The Tigers face a tough road test at Campbell County. Once again, this week in high school football will be fantastic viewing and another week that is simply cannot miss.
