There were plenty of great games to kick off the high school season. The King of the Block battle between Moeller and Princeton kicked it all off on Thursday, which saw Princeton beat Moeller for the first time since 1991. The atmosphere at Paycor Stadium was nothing short of fantastic. Friday night’s action followed it up as well. The top team in the preseason rankings, according to MaxPreps, Anderson Raptors hosted Kentucky powerhouse Louisville Trinity. The Raptors, fresh off back to back state runner ups, took it on the chin, 59-13 to start their season on a sour note. The other Eastern Cincinnati Conference team in the rankings, Winton Woods, fell to Springfield 14-13 in overtime on Saturday night, after the game was postponed due to lightning the night before. It was a tough start for the traditionally solid ECC. The other two conferences, the GCL South and GMC went head to head to start the season. The conference split their four big week 1 matchups. The aforementioned Princeton/Moeller rivalry game was the headliner with St. Xavier traveling to Lakota West to take on the Firebirds. It was Lakota West who came away with a massive and dominating 20-7 victory over the Bombers. The GCL was not to be shutout, as Elder hosted Middletown in another top 10 matchup at the Pit. Elder continued to show why they are one of the top teams in the city as they easily handled Middletown, 35-3. The final GCL/GMC matchup saw the LaSalle Lancers knock off the visiting Colerain Cardinals, 30-21, in a hard fought matchup.
